- From Tokyo to Madrid: Olympic medalists and athletes will participate at Madrid Urban Sports event after urban sports’ Olympic debut.
- MUS will hold a first level sports competition and urban culture in a free, open public event at Madrid Río from October 8th to 10th.
Madrid takes over from Tokyo and will host the best international scooter, roller freestyle, breaking, skateboarding and BMX athletes at Madrid Río – Matadero park from October 8th to 10th, after urban sports’ Olympic debut in Japan 2021.
The city will be the venue for this multisport event, which will be attended by big names such as Daniel Dhers, who arrives at Madrid after becoming one of the first Olympic medalists in the BMX discipline or Danny León and Andrea Benítez who debuted in Tokyo as representatives of the Spanish skateboarding team. Alongside them are expected the best international athletes of urban sports that will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks.
EThe MUS arrives in town to offer a wide range of sports and culture divided into five activity centers: the Madrid Río skatepark, the scene of the Bowl competition; the black esplanade where Central Park and Street Plaza will be located; the Urban Stage where the breaking competition will be held; Slaughterhouse that will host activities such as 3×3 Basketball and the Manzanares’ banks that will become a live show of urban art.
International olympians in a first level competition
Madrid Urban Sports will host top-level international men’s and women’s skateboarding, scooter, BMX and roller freestyle competitions, with the presence of Olympic athletes as well as the Spanish BMX Championship or the final test of the national breaking circuit that will become an Olympic sport in Paris 2024.
The MUS 2021 will be hold on-site for the first time after a first virtual edition in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. Among the 2020 winners were international names such as Courage Adams (BMX), Nanaka Fujisawa (skateboarding), Auguste Pellaud (scooter) or Kelvin Hoefler (skateboarding) who won the silver medal in the skateboarding’s debut at the Tokyo Olympics.
From October 8th to 10th, the best athletes will challenge themselves on the unique Madrid-Rio stage that aspires to become the international annual reference event for sports and urban culture.
Beyond the show: activities for the public
At the Madrid Urban Sports event, the public will also have the opportunity to participate in the activities located at the Enjoy area, a space for the public of all ages based on current urban trends. Activities such as Pump track, Wood wave, Mini ramps, Parkour, among others, will be carried out and a Kids Park will be installed for the smallest of the house.
The urban trend festival will be held for the first time in person and open to the public in Madrid, from October 8th to 10th. An event designed especially for young people that includes fun, spectacle, competitiveness and entertainment, also committed to the environment and sustainability.
Therefore, a campaign will be carried out to convert all the recyclable waste generated during the event into reusable material for the 2022 edition.
The MUS is the capital’s great commitment to become the epicenter of sport and urban culture and has the support of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid and Foro de empresas, in an effort by the institutions to contribute to positionate the city as a benchmark for world sport ahead of the World Capital of Sport in 2022.
Urban art and music will play a significant role
In addition to the sports competition, the Madrid Urban Sports will offer a wide culture offer betting on rap and trap as a flagship of urban music, and including as well a dedicated space for art where local graffiti artists will show their talent.
Young Blood will be the start activity holding on stage young emerging local talents who will challenge each other to demonstrate their best skills of free improvisation to the rhythm of urban music. The reward for the winners will be the opportunity to face on stage the best FMS (freestyle master series) in a great final duel.
Music will play a main role along the sports competition under the Flex Moments, an opportunity for popular trap and rap singers from Madrid, to jump into the skateparks and use it as an stage in between competitions, offering a 15 minute showcase, integrating music and sports at the same space.
